Why now is the right time.
Minister van Ark for Medical Care and Sports briefly mentioned it last week. Sports are vital when the Corona crisis is over. Why? The Netherlands has a unique infrastructure when it comes to sports.
For example, did you know that in Europe on average 12% of people are members of a sports club? While in the Netherlands this is 27% on average! Just to give some comparison material... We are followed by Germany & Denmark with both 23%, that means the Netherlands is the largest in Europe! How cool is that?
What is also interesting... According to Eurobarometer, there are a number of reasons for participating in a sport in most EU countries. And you might have guessed it. The main reasons are staying healthy, building fitness and looking good. And yes... The eye wants something too 😉 Interestingly, in the Netherlands fun is mentioned as one of the main reasons to play sports.
Back for a moment to that infrastructure we were talking about. A survey of the number of sports providers/associations in the Netherlands confirmed the size of this infrastructure.
In 2019, there were over 26,000 sports associations in the Netherlands. 26.000! With over one million volunteers and 75 sports associations. And that in our little chilly country ...
The Corona crisis has thrown a spanner in the works when it comes to club life. The 1.5 meter distance and the closed canteens do not make things more sociable.
Because, of course, exercise is fun. It keeps you healthy. And you work on your fitness. But what may actually be even more important for members of associations is having fun.
Having a nice cup of coffee together, or something stronger of course... Laughing, talking and maybe even singing. How we miss that conviviality!
But one thing is certain. When the time finally comes. That canteens may open again. The tap can be reconnected. The dust can be wiped off the sound system. That's when things will go wild.
