Coffee quality rises!
Did you know that the coffee industry is the second largest industry in the world after oil if we look at volume? Dutch people drank an average of about 20 million cups of coffee per day last year. Although figures have shown that less coffee is drunk in the Netherlands since 2005, we are happy to spend more money for a good cup of coffee. We may drink less coffee, but of higher quality. This quality demands not only the taste of the coffee, but also the beans, equipment, and service.
Coffee is a product that is drunk all over the world, but tastes almost the same nowhere. By using different beans and equipment, you experience a different taste sensation everywhere. Because there is often a big difference between your cup of coffee at home, at work, or when visiting a catering establishment. More and more coffee is also being consumed in the hospitality industry. Of the total coffee consumption in the Netherlands, 30% is consumed in the hospitality industry. It is not for nothing that this year's Horecava exhibition in Amsterdam has a Coffee Stage with all innovations and news regarding coffee in one place.
Why are people spending more money on coffee? It most likely has to do with our increased prosperity. People travel all over the world, and during these travels they also drink coffee. Drink a coffee from a barista in Italy, where coffee has been turned into an art form, and your cup of coffee at home will never taste the same again! People want to enjoy the same quality at home, at work and in catering establishments and are willing to pay for it.
The rise of Senseo in 2001 started the decline of coffee waste. Where it used to be common to brew a whole pot of coffee, then throw away half of it, people could now brew coffee by the cup! Several coffee manufacturers have developed this further, providing pads and cups to consumers. Drawback to this? Pads and cups do not provide the crema layer and taste we desire from our coffee. Because be honest, nothing is as delicious as a cup of fresh bean coffee.
